What happens if my spouse or partner passes away?
You can stay in your home, usually as long as you can cope with it and can look after yourself, provided you qualify for occupancy under state laws and the terms of the Estate Contract. It can sometimes be a problem if the Estate contract is in the name of the deceased resident only. For better protection, the Estate contract should always be in joint names.
How does government legislation protect the rights of retirement village residents?
Retirement villages operate under state based legislation. In New South Wales this is the Retirement Villages Act 2010. The act provides a range of protections around the lease agreement, resident consultation processes and resale entitlements.
You can seek further information about NSW Retirement Village legislation from:
NSW Office of Fair Trading 13 32 20
Council on the Ageing NSW (COTA) 1800 449 102
NSW Retirement Villages Residents Association (NSWRVRA) 1300 787 213
Is there public transport near to the Estate?
Yes. In Inverell there is a bus service from town to McLean Care 5 days a week (Monday - Friday).
Will my friends and family be able to visit?
Yes. Your family and friends are welcome to visit anytime. Visitors are asked to park in the nominated visitors parking if they are unable to park in your driveway as roads need to be kept clear for emergency access at all times.
Can I bring my pet?
An application to management will be considered for small pets such as small dogs, cats and birds etc. The final decision to accept or reject an animal will be at the discretion of management, taking into account all issues in a fair and objective manner. Pets owners must comply with all council regulation to pet keeping eg: registering ,desexing etc.
Can I have a garden?
Yes, you are welcome to create a garden for your enjoyment around your residence. Residents are also welcome to assist with the maintenance of the gardens in the common areas by weeding or watering. Just let us know if major maintenance needs addressing near your property, such as pruning, so we can arrange for that to be undertaken in a safe and secure manner.
Are there scheduled meetings for the residents?
Yes. Meetings are scheduled 3 times per year. It is not compulsory to attend these meetings. The meetings allow residents to learn more about the village and socialise with other residents.
We’re here to help you every step of the way. From working out the right type of care you'll need, to guiding you through the aged care application process and working out what you can afford and what you can expect. Let’s get you started – give us a call – we’re great listeners!
